10 Easy Ways to Drink More Water

Use these easy tips to increase your water intake and feel your absolute best!

I know we have all heard that we should drink more water.  When it comes to your health and especially weight loss it is so important and beneficial.  Our bodies are made up of 60% water. I drink water all day long. Yes, it makes me have to go to the bathroom more, but it’s worth the benefits.  My body is now so used to drinking water all day, that if I have to go more than an hour or so I crave it so much. Use these 10 easy tips to drink more water!

Many people don’t like water and prefer to drink other beverages.  It not as easy for some to just completely switch to drinking water and I get that!  I am a firm believer that if you don’t like something then you need to have more of it.  This seriously works!  For example, I used to hate beets.  I tried them here and there and thought they tasted like dirt.  Everyone says they are good for you, so I kept trying them and now I love them!  They are a perfect addition to my fresh salads or cooked veggies.

This is why I’m making this list!  I want to give you some easy ways to drink more water.  Once you get used to doing it you will crave it and it won’t feel like a chore anymore.  Before long you won’t crave the sugary high-calorie drinks and you will find it so much easier to lose weight.  The worst thing you can do when you are trying to lose weight is to drink your calories.  They don’t help to fill you up at all and they add zero nutritional value.

Some people don’t realize that they are just thirsty when they feel hungry.  Often dehydration can feel like hunger.  Again, if you add in these tips to drinking more water you will be less likely to snack and overstuff yourself and lose weight so much easier. Let’s talk about the consequences of not drinking enough water along with the benefits of drinking the proper amount of water.

How Much Water Should I Drink in a Day?

The most standard answer you will get for this is 8-8 oz glasses of water a day.  If this seems more simple to you and you would like to start with this then go for it!  I recommend drinking half your body weight in ounces.  For example, if you weigh 120lbs, you should be drinking at least 60 oz of water a day. This may seem like a lot and that why I’m hoping this list helps!

Drinking more water is such a simple and easy way to improve your health.  It’s a great place to start if you are just beginning your weight loss journey.  Also, if you are just looking for some new ideas and want to switch up your routine a bit this will help you too!  I know I get stuck in ruts all the time and sometimes the simplest things will add some variety back into my day and make the biggest difference.

#1 Drink a Glass of Water First Thing In the Morning

Drinking water first thing in the morning immediately rehydrates your body from a long night’s sleep.  This will also help increase your alertness and boost your energy.  Drink a large glass before your coffee, breakfast, or workout.  I always have at least 10 oz of water (with my Energize mixed in) before I start my workout. This combo gives me a boost and makes it 100x easier to get through my workout.  I’m also starting my day 10 oz down! I seriously can’t start my day without it.

#2 Drink Water Out of a Straw

I’m not sure why this helps, but it does!  I recently tried some of the stainless steel straws and I love them.  The water is so much colder when you drink through them too!  Find yourself a cute cup with a straw, like this one, and sip away!!

#3 Make Your Water Taste Better

This is one of the best tips out of the 10 easy ways to drink more water.  There are so many different and healthy ways to add flavor to your water. You can make a pitcher in the morning and drink it throughout the day or just mix it in whatever cup you are drinking out of. I highly recommend getting yourself a cool water bottle to refill. It’s way cheaper in the long run and way more environmentally friendly than bottled water.

There are also these cool water fusion bottles you can try.  This pitcher is cool because you can add fruit, it ensures you drink a gallon of water a day, and it gives you time markers to make sure you stay on track. Or if you won’t be home all day you can use this individual bottle and take it with you wherever you go.

#4 Always Order Water When Eating Out

When I go out to eat I always order water!  It’s also a great idea to have a large glass of water before eating your meal.  This will help fill you up a little and prevent overeating.  This is especially important when you are drinking alcohol.  It’s a good idea to have a glass of water in between each alcoholic beverage.  This will help to keep you hydrated and prevent a hangover the next morning.

#5 1 to 1 Rule

This one goes along with what I previously mentioned.  This doesn’t only go for alcoholic drinks.  You should use this for pop, juice, milk, or any other beverage.  If you are trying to lose weight, I highly suggest you cut out these other beverages altogether or limit them to one a day.  If you can’t live without them I recommend drinking a large glass of water in between every other beverage.

#6 Set Reminders

This is a great idea if you simply get too busy throughout your day and forget to drink enough water.  You can set reminders on your phone.  Every time it goes off you drink 8-10 oz of water.  Do this several times throughout the day and you will meet your goal in no time!  I also love these water bottles that have time markers on them to make sure you stay on track throughout the day.

#7 Keep Water With You at All Times

This is something I always do!  I know it can be easier for some than others depending on your job and lifestyle. That’s why I did this post on 10 ways to drink more water! Try to keep it with you no matter what! I’m a dental hygienist and I make it a point to take several drinks of water in between each patient.  This also makes me have to go to the bathroom between each patient, but that helps me get my steps in!  This will help you get in the habit of drinking more water and making it part of your daily routine.  In my Top 8 Life-Changing Personal Development Books post, I talk about a book called Atomic Habits.  If you have a hard time sticking to any good habit or getting rid of the bad ones, I highly recommend reading this book.

#8 Switch Out Soda for Sparkling Water

If you are a big pop drinker this is a great first step to take.  Trust me, I know sparkling water doesn’t taste amazing, but you can train your tastebuds to like it!  There are tons of flavored waters or sparkling waters that you can try.  You can even get the packs that you can carry with you and add to your bottled water. I recommend drinking just plain old water most of the time, but this is a great substitute if you really can’t get yourself to drink plain H2O!

#9 Drink a Glass Before Each Meal

If you are trying to lose weight, this is a great tip!  If you drink a large glass of water before each meal you will help suppress your appetite (at least a little), which can lead to less overeating. Many times we think we are hungry when we are just thirsty.  Drinking water before your meal will also help with digestion.  I would shoot to drink at least 8 oz before eating every meal or snack throughout the day.

#10 Fill a Large Jug With Water in the Morning

As I said, you should shoot to drink at least 1/2 your body weight in ounces of water each day.  Another goal some work towards is drinking a gallon of water a day.  If you want to step up your game this is something you can work on.  You can simply get a gallon of water from the store and then refill it each day or you can try one of these if you want it a little fancier.

I hope you find these tips helpful and you can easily incorporate them into your life.  Drinking more water seems like such a simple thing, but so many people struggle with it.  This is one of the many things that we can easily add to our day that will greatly improve your life.  If you drink more water for one day you may not notice much of a difference (other than going to the bathroom more), but think about if you did it every day for a year!  Simple habits like this add up every day and can greatly improve our quality of life.

Please give these tips a try. If you think ordering one of the cool water bottles will help, then, by all means, give it a shot, but you don’t have to spend any money to make this a good habit that can last a lifetime. So go ahead!! Drink up!!
