This breakfast smoothie is the best way to start your day and jump-start your weight loss. We all know breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It helps get our metabolism going first thing in the morning and gives us the energy we need to get through the day. I always start my day with a healthy breakfast. It gets me going and it feels especially good after a great workout.
When it comes to losing weight your diet is the most important factor. You can exercise all day and if your diet is crap you are going to feel like crap and definitely not lose any weight. Of course, the main factor in eating healthy is self-discipline. Self-discipline is highest in the morning and then as the day goes on it dwindles away just like our energy.
This is why so many will eat a healthy breakfast, salad for lunch, and then the entire kitchen for dinner! I have done it so many times! Self-discipline is like a muscle. The more we use it and practice it, the stronger it will get. Starting your day with a healthy smoothie is the best way to “exercise” this new habit. If you are just starting your weight loss journey you can start by adding this smoothie into your morning and not changing anything else.
My hope is that when you do this, you will be more satisfied by lunchtime and you will make better choices. Then eventually you will feel so great after eating healthy for lunch that you will be encouraged to eat a healthy dinner as well. I’m sure most of you have made or bought smoothies in the past. The problem with most smoothies, especially the ones from a smoothie shop, is they are loaded with fruit and sugar and not enough of the “good” stuff. These places make delicious smoothies, don’t get me wrong, but they are not good to drink every day (at least the ones I have seen). Not to mention, who can afford to buy one every day?
I made the same smoothie for years until I realized I was doing it all wrong. It wasn’t until reading the book “Body Love“ by Kelly Leveque, where she taught me about the “Fab 4 Smoothie”, that I really learned how to make the best breakfast smoothie for weight loss. Step 1. Pick your protein
When it comes to choosing the right protein powder it can be overwhelming. There are so many different ones out there and they all claim to be the best. This really isn’t anything to obsess over, but you want to find one that you like and actually enjoy. If you don’t like the taste you are a lot less likely to drink it every morning. My favorite one is Birdman Protein Powder. I have been ordering this one for months and I love it!

Step 2. Pick Your Fruit
Adding fruit in your smoothie makes it so much tastier and enjoyable, but we don’t want to go overboard with it. If you are used to throwing in a banana, a handful of strawberries, and some mango then this will be a change for you. I recommend adding 1 cup of fruit OR a 1/2 of a banana at most. When we load our smoothies with fruit, it will cause a sugar crash a few hours later and no one needs that in their life!

Adding greens to your smoothie is an easy way to add them to your diet. It’s recommended to eat at least 4 cups of greens a day, so this will take care of at least one of those cups. Spinach is by far my favorite green to add to my breakfast smoothie. It adds nutritional value and you can’t taste it at all. I also add kale on occasion, but I don’t add as much because it can give it a bitter taste.

Fat is one of the ingredients I was never adding to my smoothie before. I tried to stay away from it as much as I could because I thought it would lead to weight gain, but after adding fat into my smoothie I noticed a world of difference! Fat is exactly what I needed to help curve my hunger and get me through until lunch. Another thing to keep in mind is we don’t want to overdo it with fat. You should only add 1-2 tbs of fat into your smoothie.

Step 5. Pick Your Fiber
Fiber is another key ingredient in my smoothie that helps take it to the next level. Adding fiber is so easy and it doesn’t change the flavor at all. If you are not used to adding in fiber to your diet I would start small and then increase as your body adjusts. Some people can have gas or bloating if they add too much too quickly. If you are already used to eating a good amount of fiber you can add up to 2 Tbs into your smoothie. For most, I would start with 1 Tbs.

Step 6. Pick your Liquid
There are several different options when it comes to what liquid you want to use and how much. I really like to make a smoothie bowl when I am home. I find it more satisfying to eat my smoothie with a spoon, rather than drink it. When I’m leaving for work early I have to make it a smoothie shake, so I can drink it in the car. While I don’t have exact measurements on how I do this I will explain the best I can!
When Making a Smoothie Bowl for Weight Loss
- Use milk instead of water. This will make it a little creamier and thicker.
- Only use frozen fruit
- Add at least a 1/2 cup of ice
- Put all of your ingredients in your blender and start with 1/2 cup of milk. Add just enough as you go to make it blend well.
- Pour in bowl and top with whatever you like, but don’t go overboard. This can add lots of calories if you aren’t careful. I top mine with 1-2 Tbs of fruit, cinnamon, and 1 Tbs shredded coconut.
When making a Smoothie Shake for Weight Loss
- You can use milk or water
- Add all ingredients and then add 1 cup of liquid. Blend a little and add more if needed.
- If you have very limited time in the morning you can make this the night before and store in the refrigerator.

- Almond Milk ( I use Unsweetened Original Almond Milk from Aldi)
- Skim Milk
- Coconut Milk
- Soy Milk
- Coconut Water
My Blender of Choice
You can use any blender you prefer. I’ve had a Ninja for years and I love it! My newest model came with a large and small smoothie cup attachment. I use the large one when making my smoothies and it’s a perfect size. I have used the Magic Bullet in the past and I wasn’t a fan at all. It didn’t blend well and I had to stop several times and mix it up. It can be frustrating!
